Haverfordwest County fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Cardiff Metropolitan University in the quarter-finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup on Tuesday evening.

Two goals in as many minutes from Harry Owen and Adam Roscrow were enough to see the Students through to the last four, with the Bluebirds unable to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal.

Wayne Jones made two changes to the side that beat Cefn Druids 2-1 on Saturday, with Wojciech Gajda replacing Lee Idzi in goal, and Kyle Patten and Iori Humphreys coming in for Kieran Lewis and Mason Jones-Thomas.

The Bluebirds lost Danny Williams to injury just before the half hour mark, with the forward replaced by the returning Alhagi Touray Sisay.

There was an early effort on goal for the lively Ben Fawcett, who weaved his way to the edge of the area before firing a shot at Alex Lang, who saved low down.

The visitors nearly went ahead a couple of minutes later when Owen’s first time volley was pushed to safety by an excellent fingertip save by Gajda.

Fawcett was heavily involved in the first-half, and had two further opportunities to put County ahead. The first was a volley from the edge of the 18 yard box which flew just wide of the left post, before his instinctive flick at the near post from a corner was saved by Lang.

The striker glanced a header from Jack Wilson’s throw-in just wide at the beginning of the second-half, but, just minute’s later, the Archers were ahead.

After an attack reached the edge of the Bluebirds’ penalty area, Owen struck a powerful effort past Gajda and into the bottom right corner.

County barely had an opportunity to react to going behind before suddenly finding themselves trailing by two goals. A defensive lapse allowed Roscrow to break through on goal, before the striker took the ball around Gajda and towards the byline where he found the net before the Bluebirds defence could recover.

Jones’ side went close to pulling a goal back when Fawcett squared the ball to Touray Sisay from the byline, but the striker saw his goal-bound effort blocked by the Met defence.

Fawcett’s final opportunity came three minutes from time, when the ball fell to his feet from a corner and, somehow, his effort from close range was cleared to safety.

The Bluebirds are next in action on Saturday (October 30) when they host Newtown at the Ogi Bridge Meadow, kick-off is 14:30).
