Haverfordwest County make the journey to Latham Park to take on Newtown this Saturday, as the JD Cymru Premier makes a welcome return after a month’s break because of COVID-19.

The Bluebirds were last in action on December 18, when we narrowly lost 1-0 to reigning champions Connah’s Quay Nomads at Deeside Stadium.

However, it was announced on December 22 that the FAW National League Board had taken the decision to suspend the Cymru Leagues following the Welsh Government’s announcement that team sports were to be limited to 50 spectators due to the rise of the omicron variant of COVID-19.

The Robins, who currently sit second in the table, were victorious in their final game before the break, winning 2-0 at home to 10-man Flint Town United thanks to goals from Aaron Williams and Jake Walker.

In the previous meeting between the sides at the end of October, a goal from Alhagi Touray Sisay gave the Bluebirds a hard-fought 1-0 win at the Ogi Bridge Meadow.

Looking ahead to the game, assistant manager Gary Richards said: “As coaches, we always say that it’s mainly about us, but we know Newtown are a good team.

“They’ve also had a month off, so you’re hoping that the break didn’t benefit them as much as did us because they were on a good run.

“Chris has done a fantastic job there. I’ve only met him a couple of times because I haven’t been involved in this league for too long, but it’s clear to see what a great job he’s doing there.

“They have a number of dangerous players, so we have to make sure that we’re aware of their dangers, but we’re also focusing on where our dangerous players can hurt them. So it’s about having respect for them, but obviously we’ll be looking to win the football match.”

Key man: Aaron Williams – The former Harrogate Town and AFC Telford United striker has been in fine form for the Robins this season, netting 12 goals in his 16 appearances to date. This impressive tally, which includes hat-tricks away to Cefn Druids and Barry Town United, is enough to put him joint-second with Michael Wilde on the Cymru Premier top scorers list, with the pair trailing Declan McManus of The New Saints by four goals.
